Koto

I received a question about the picture of a chimpanzee above this weblog. It is Koto, who has been with us since October 2005. His mother was killed by a hunter in the area of Koto. Koto was kept in horrific conditions, tied by a rope, alone in a dirty room. He was confiscated and brought to the Limbe Wildlife Centre.
Koto is a very affectionate chimpanzee that likes to be hugged. After spending a year and a half in the infants group, he was moved to the group of young chimpanzees. From the first moment he has been doing well there. There is not as much physical contact with keepers and volunteers in this group as there was in the infants group, but Koto is playing a lot with the other chimpanzees and seems to enjoy being in the older group. He is now around three years old so he has grown a lot since the picture was taken.
My name is Felix Lankester, the Project Director of the Limbe Wildlife Centre and also the head veterinarian. I have been at the project since April 2004.

Thanks Simone, Koto is absolutely beautiful. Great to hear he enjoys playing with his buddies. So very tragic that his mother was killed. It just breaks my heart what is happening to all primates…many a night I cry myself to sleep over this. And I continue to pray.

Lucia, I just read about this in Africa news…and I’m very concerned also. The LWC is located in the south western province, where a lot of the turmoil is reported to be occurring. Please Simone, let us know how you all are doing and please take care.

Dear Theresa, to our huge joy AllAfrica report that after social tension, calm and peace return to Cameroon. It’s wrote, literatim, that “inhabitants of five of Cameroon’s ten provinces are once more up and doing. These much cherished peace and tranquillity could be discerned in the faces and reactions of the people resident in the provinces of Centre, Littoral, West, Southwest and Northwest”. Cheers Theresa, Simone, Stephen and cameroonian.

Hi Simone, thanks for your kind email, we are very relieved to hear things have settled down. Hopefully, peace will prevail. Just helped with the milk donation, I know the babies are hungry! Please take care and bless everyone for doing such a wonderful job with all the different animals and parrots.
